Fresh New Look, 50+ New Piers and Locks, and AI Travel Assistance – What’s New in Thames Commuter 2.1

ℹ️ Thames Commuter 2.1 arrives on all app stores on September 10th

The new Thames Commuter app has arrived.

We’ve rebuilt the entire app from the ground up; reimagined for commuters, river users, and curious navigators alike. The app now goes beyond London, covering piers and locks from source to sea.

With built-in AI monitoring the Thames network for disruptions, you’ll be the first to know about delays, closures, and and river conditions at your local pier.

And for the first time ever for any Watch & Navy app, Thames Commuter is available on iOS.

⚠️ Important for Android users: Thames Commuter 2+ is published as a new app listing. If you already have an earlier version installed, it will not update automatically. Please download the new version directly from the new store listing.

The old app will remain available for a short transition period but will be discontinued in November. To keep receiving updates and new features, switch to the new version before then.

What is Thames Commuter?

Thames Commuter is an independent app by Watch & Navy, offering real-time arrivals, timetables, and route maps for river travel along the Thames. First launched in 2018, it now covers the full length of the river from central London to inland piers and locks.

While not affiliated with TfL or Thames Clippers, Thames Commuter is built with care for everyday river users, providing a clean, intuitive alternative to official sources.

Here’s what’s new in Thames Commuter 2.1:

New app, familiar layout

Thames Commuter 2.0 (iOS)

In this update we have rebuilt the entire app and refined the design from the inside out. Tap through the list of arrivals to view piers and line maps just like in the original app, now with a cleaner, more detailed, and focused layout. We’ve redesigned everything to deliver the information you need quickly, making it easier than ever to navigate the Thames.

Know exactly how long it’ll take to reach your nearest pier with Thames Commuter Plus– whether you’re walking, cycling, or riding an e-scooter. Set your preferred mode of travel in the Settings menu to get tailored, real-time estimates and the most efficient route to piers within range.

Full River Coverage: 22 New Piers And All 45 Locks

Thames Commuter 2.1

Most Thames travel happens in central London, but there’s a whole river to explore upstream. With version 2.1, Thames Commuter now covers all 45 non-tidal locks and more than 22 new leisure piers inland, including ferries, landing points, and tour stops.

At each location, you’ll find essential service information and how to make enquiries. Whether you’re commuting in the city or planning a journey upriver, Thames Commuter gives you the full picture of the river in one place.

Travel Assistant AI

Travel Assistant AI

The Travel Assistant AI is your personal guide to river travel. It can check arrivals at your nearest pier, help you plan routes across the Thames, or answer general questions about the transport network.

Simply tap the 💬 icon on the main map to launch the assistant and start asking your questions about the river.

⚠️ Travel Assistant AI is an early feature and still learning. If something doesn’t look right, tap the thumbs-down button at the bottom of the chat to send us feedback. We’ll be keeping a close eye on reports and will make improvements as quickly as possible.

River Intelligence AI

Travel Assistant AI

Our new AI-powered River Intelligence system keeps watch on the Thames 7 days a week so you don’t have to. It monitors the river daily and highlights anything that might affect your journey.

Disruptions to Thames Clippers or the Woolwich Ferry appear in warning banners the moment you open the app. For piers and locks beyond London, you’ll see timely notices of disruptions to services, lock closures, or hazards in the surrounding area.

Information Centre

RI Information Centre

The Information Centre provides a general overview of conditions on the Thames. At the top you’ll see the current river status (powered by River Intelligence)– a summary that includes any active warnings along with the latest weather in London.

Detailed alerts still appear directly on the home screen, so you don’t need to check here for urgent updates. Instead, the Information Centre is where you’ll find a broader picture of the river, plus quick links to official services like Thames Clippers and the Woolwich Ferry.
